What we Believe
"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." - A.W. Tozer
The following are the core beliefs of Faithway Baptist Church in Elk Grove, CA.
The Bible itself is the sole and final source of all that we believe.
The Scriptures
Holy men of God wrote the Holy Scriptures consisting of the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments as the Holy Spirit supernaturally moved them. They are, therefore, God’s perfect, inerrant, and infallible Word. The Scriptures are complete and final, requiring neither addition nor deletion in any part, and preserved without error for English speaking people in the King James Bible (A.V. 1611). They are our sole authority and standard for all matters of faith and practice. 2 Timothy 3:15,16; 2 Peter 1:19-21
The True God
There is only one true sovereign and Holy God. Spirit in nature, God is a triune being eternally existing in three distinct and co-equal persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God is all-knowing, all-powerful and ever-present. Deuteronomy 6:4; John 4:24; Matthew 3:16,17; 1 John 3:20; Genesis 18:14; Matthew 28:20
The Lord Jesus Christ
The Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God who became man without ceasing to be God and so is complete in both His deity and humanity. In His incarnation He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, the only begotten of the Father, tempted as man yet without sin, He died for the sins of all mankind, was buried and rose again the third day. He came to reveal God, He died to redeem man, He rose the third day both literally and physically to make sure proof of man’s redemption. He has ascended to Heaven where He is now exalted at the right hand of God the Father. Philippians 2:5-11; Matthew 1:23; Hebrews 4:15; John 3:16; 1 Corinthians 15
Christ’s Return
Christ’s return is both literal and imminent and shall be bodily, personal, visible, pre-millennial, and pre-tribulational. At His return, believers, both dead and alive, shall be changed and caught-up together to meet the Lord in the air. John 14:1-3; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is a divine person; equal with God the Father and God the Son and of the same attributes and perfections. He convicts the world of sin, of judgment and of righteousness, and He is the Agent who seals, endues, guides, teaches, witnesses, sanctifies and helps the believer. Acts 5:3,4; John 16:8; Ephesians 1:13,14; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:14; 1 John 2:27; Romans 8:16; 1 Corinthians 6:11; Romans 8:26,27
The Creation
The Genesis account of creation is a literal account of a recent creation in which God the Creator took six solar days to create and make all things terrestrial and celestial. We reject all man made notions of life evolving from one created ‘kind’ into another, which is contrary to God’s established law that they should bring forth only “after their kind.” Genesis 1-2; Exodus 20:11; Mark 10:6
Man
Man was originally created in the image of God, perfect and without sin. Man freely chose to sin, which brought both spiritual and physical death. All men have since been subject to the law of sin and death and are under the just condemnation and wrath of a righteous God. Genesis 1:26 and 3:1-7; Romans 5:12 and 8:2; John 3:18,36
Marriage
Marriage is the joining of one man and one woman. Genesis 2:24
Salvation
Man is totally depraved and unable to save himself. His salvation was bought by Christ through His death, burial, and resurrection, and is solely a work of God’s Grace. In His death Christ made full and vicarious atonement for man and was the propitiation of God’s just wrath against sinful man. This atonement is offered as a free gift of God’s grace and is the sinner’s only means of justification before God. Justification is a one-time act that is effective through all eternity and is available to all who will receive it by faith, believing in the sufficiency of Christ’s finished work, and none of their own, to save them. At the moment of justification the believer is reborn. This new birth is not a reformation of the old but is by sovereign act a new creation whereby the old man dead in trespasses and sins is made partaker of the divine nature and receives eternal life. Man is only saved once, his salvation is kept by God’s power and, therefore, he is secure in Christ forever. John 3; 1 Corinthians 15; Ephesians 2; John 17
The Church
The Church was ordained and established by our Lord as a local visible assembly of baptized believers who observe the ordinances of Christ and continue steadfastly in right doctrine, fellowship and prayer. Its government is autonomous having only two offices, Pastor (Bishop, Elder) and Deacon, and Christ as its head. Matthew 16:18; Acts 2:42; Ephesians 5:23
